I have been photographing major milestones for the Greening Family since 2018. Including the births of their two youngest children, with maternity sessions in-between. They are so genuine and kind, which always shines through their photos. I love seeing a family fall into their natural affection for each other, and just play and laugh together as I quietly snap photos.
Throughout this shoot, we moved from running down the hills, to a blanket for the kids to rest, to exploring the taller grasses. This kept things interesting for everyone, especially the little boys – Kai and Teo.
The Greenings did an amazing job at embracing the reality of family photos with three young kids – craziness, playfulness, and a whole range of emotions. And I was there to capture them all! I never want family sessions to feel stiff or stressful. Instead I want to help encourage a true representation of this fleeting phase in your family’s life, before your kids grow another inch!
The dad, Vaughn, is from New Zealand and hoped to find a family photo location that reminded him of his birthplace. Tunnel Springs in North Salt Lake has lush rolling hills that made him and the rest of the Greening family feel at home.
As a wedding and lifestyle photographer, I split my time between Utah and Southern California. This means I have a lengthy running list of gorgeous family photo locations, or spots for other lifestyle shoots. While there is a special place in my heart for in-home family sessions, I also love stunning outdoor spots like this one.
What matters is finding a spot that is special to your family in some way. Perhaps it is the place you and your partner met. Maybe a place you loved as a child, where you now make memories with your own kids. Or a spot that reminds you of an important place in your life, like Tunnel Springs does for the Greening family.

[…] If being photographed is not comfortable for you, try bringing along a simple prop like this neutral blanket. You’ll be surprised when you have another option like this, instead of just standing for more traditional poses. I love doing this for family photos as well, as you can see during this other recent Salt Lake City family session. […]
